24V to 12V DC-DC converters: enclosed SD series

SD B-input models take a 24V battery to an isolated 12V output: 18–36 VDC input on the SD-15, 19–36 VDC on the SD-25 to SD-200 and 20–36 VDC on the SD-350, per each datasheet. The SD-500L and SD-1000L cover 19–72 VDC, so one model works on 24V and 48V systems.

24V to 12V DIN rail and vehicle converters (DDR, RSD)

DIN rail DDR converters for control boxes and battery cabinets: G-type DDR-15, DDR-30 and DDR-60 accept 9–36 VDC, L-type 18–75 VDC, and B-type DDR-120 and DDR-480 accept 16.8–33.6 VDC. RSD converters are built for vehicle and railway batteries: RSD-30 and RSD-60 G-type take 9–36 VDC and L-type 18–72 VDC; the RSD-150B takes 16.8–31.2 VDC. Check each datasheet for the exact range.

Step 1

Step-down vs step-up, isolated vs non-isolated

Step-down converters take a higher battery voltage (24V or 48V) to a lower one (12V). Step-up converters do the opposite, for example 12V to 24V. Isolated converters separate input and output grounds, which helps with noise and ground loops; non-isolated converters share the negative and are smaller and cheaper.

Converter rating (W) ≥ output load (A) × output voltage ÷ 0.8
Input current (A) ≈ output watts ÷ input voltage ÷ efficiency

Vehicles

Wide-input and railway/vehicle models (RSD)

Vehicle and railway batteries swing well above and below their nominal voltage during cranking and charging. Wide-input RSD converters are designed for that; check the input range, operating temperature and vibration specs in the datasheet before choosing.

AC loads

Running 120VAC loads from batteries

For microwaves, power tools and other 120VAC loads, use a true sine wave inverter instead of a DC-DC converter. MEAN WELL TS, NTS and NTU inverters run from 12V, 24V or 48V batteries.

24V to 12V converter FAQs

How do I get 12V from a 24V truck battery?

Use a step-down DC-DC converter with a 24V-range input and 12V output, rated at your 12V load ÷ 0.8. Example: 15 A of 12V accessories = 180 W, so at least a 225 W converter. Do not tap 12V from one battery of a 24V pair; it unbalances the batteries.

Isolated vs non-isolated DC-DC: which do I need?

Choose isolated when the load needs its own ground reference, for radios, instruments and anything sensitive to noise or ground loops. Non-isolated is fine for simple loads that share the vehicle negative.

Can a DC-DC converter charge a battery?

Not as a rule. A standard converter has a fixed output and no charge curve, so it can overcharge or undercharge a battery. Use a battery charger, or a model whose datasheet lists a battery charging function.

What size converter for my 12V loads?

Add the current of all 12V loads that can run together, multiply by 12 and divide by 0.8. Include start-up current of pumps, fans and compressors.

Can I use them on boats (vibration, humidity)?

Yes, if the model suits the environment: check the operating temperature, humidity and vibration specs in the datasheet, and mount the converter in a dry, ventilated place away from bilge water.
